Sunday 15 March 2020.
The day had finally arrived,; the dream cruise to Antarctica on the Greg Mortimer. We were informed that the risk of Covid19 required us to complete a temperature check and health form prior to boarding, and were temperature tested in the hotel.
Surprisingly we then went on a bus tour first to Martial Glacier then to the Maritime Museum. (This would be my third visit to the Museum but I loved the place.)
Martial Glacier
A step-down from others seen on my trip, the Martial glacier is situated on a northerly mountain peak above Ushuaia. It is Ushuaia's main fresh water supply and at risk because the glacier is retreating.

Next we toured the harbour
The Saint Christopher was launched in UK in 1943, served in the Normandy Landing, served in the US then sold to an Argentinean company in 1947. In 1953 it was used for salvage operations on Hamburg South America Line's, SS Monte Cervantes. In 1954 it suffered engine & rudder damage and has been beached and abandoned since. The ship has had a variety of names since being launched. |

Following a visit to the Naval Museum ( a separate blog) we boarded MV Greg Mortimer
Soon we were underway. Unbeknown to us; we would not return to Ushuaia.
