The streets of the Punta Arenas were lined with many beautiful buildings posssibly built in the gold rush and sheep farming in the 19th and easy 20th century.
After having completed my shopping, I met up with Nikolas who helped me navigate to the bus terminal to collect the compensation payment for the missing case & its contents. After a farewell drink we passed the Plaza de Armas that has an impressive Memorial to Ferdinand Magellan in honour of his historic voyage that discovered a Western route to the Spice Islands. He set out from Spain in 1519 with a fleet of 5 ships; en-route he discovered what is now known as the Straits of Magellan and became the first European to cross the Pacific Ocean.

It was easy to see this large city is a important port in Chile that was built on maritime traffic and trade as well as its current logistical importance for access to Antartica.

Once on board we oriented ourselves around the ship. Despite being due to sail that evening. the harbourmaster closed the port due to high winds.
